Will Lane and Irwin Star in Broadway Revival of Waiting for Godot?

| photo by Aubrey Reuben | Tony Award winners Nathan Lane and Bill Irwin are currently in negotiations to star in a Broadway revival of Samuel Beckett's Waiting for Godot that will open before the end of the current theatre season, according to the New York Post.
The Roundabout Theatre Company production would play Studio 54, according to the New York daily. Lane would be cast as Estragon with Irwin as Vladimir. Anthony Page, who directed Irwin in the recent revival of Who's Afraid of Virigina Woolf?, would helm the production. There has been no official announcement about the production. (A revival of Bob Fosse's Dancin', the kinetic revue of musical numbers created by the late master choreographer, had been announced to begin performances at Roundabout's Studio 54 April 17, 2009. There has been no further announcement about this revival.)
Irwin had been scheduled to star in a Broadway-bound production of Godot that would originate at Seattle Repertory Theatre. The Seattle mounting was recently canceled. In a statement the Rep said, "Waiting for Godot was planned as a Broadway transfer that relied on the cooperation and financial support of a commercial partner. That partner decided not to go forward with a New York production of Godot and with the loss of this co-producer, plans for a Seattle to Broadway transfer were abandoned." A spokesperson for Elizabeth McCann, who was scheduled to co-produce the Broadway mounting with Seattle Repertory Theatre and Joey Parnes, could only confirm that the Seattle Rep engagement had been canceled. A previous casting notice indicated that Tony winner Garry Hynes would direct the Broadway revival of the Samuel Beckett classic.
Waiting for Godot, according to Seattle Rep, is described as such: "Considered by many to be the most significant English language play of the 20th century, this absurdist comedy places two Charlie Chaplin-like tramps in the middle of nowhere to await the mysterious Godot."
In addition to his Tony-winning roles in The Producers and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Nathan Lane has starred on The Great White Way in November, Butley, Present Laughter, Merlin, The Wind in the Willows, Some Americans Abroad, On Borrowed Time, Guys and Dolls, Laughter on the 23rd Floor, Love! Valour! Compassion! and The Man Who Came to Dinner. The actor has also been featured in such films as "Addams Family Values," "Mousehunt," "Love's Labour's Lost" and "The Birdcage," scoring a Golden Globe nomination for his work in the latter. He was also seen in the film adaptation of "Nicholas Nickleby."
Bill Irwin is one of the major physical comedians working in theatre, and has also acted in more conventional scripted works, as well, including Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, for which he won a Best Actor Tony Award. He is widely revered for his turn in the Broadway clown show, Fool Moon. Irwin starred opposite Sally Field in the 2002 Tony Award-winning play The Goat or, Who is Sylvia?, by Edward Albee.
