Roundabout Theatre Company's new production of David Rabe's Vietnam-era drama, Streamers, about post-boot camp soldiers on the brink of war, begins performances Oct. 17 toward a Nov. 11 opening Off-Broadway at the Laura Pels Theatre.

Scott Ellis (Curtains, Twelve Angry Men, The Little Dog Laughed) directs. This production was inspired by a staging Ellis helmed in 2007 for Huntington Theatre Company in Boston. Some Huntington cast members resurface for the New York City run.

Streamers features Hale Appleman, Axel Avin Jr., EJ Cantu, Larry Clarke, Ato Essandoh, Brad Fleischer, Charlie Hewson, Jason McDowell-Green, Cobey Mandarino, John Sharian and J.D. Williams.

This is a limited engagement through Jan. 11, 2009.

The design team includes Neil Patel (sets), Tom Broecker (costumes), Jeff Croiter (lights) and John Gromada (sound).

According to Roundabout, "In this powerful American masterpiece, four young soldiers fresh from boot camp wait anxiously in 1965 Virginia, watching the Vietnam conflict escalate. As they struggle to make sense of their new life in the army, tensions rise over race, sexuality, and class, culminating in an explosive act that changes them forever. Streamers is an unflinching exploration of the turmoil and confusion facing young men threatened by forces beyond their control."

Mike Nichols directed The Public Theater's 1976-77 Off-Broadway and Broadway production of Streamers, which won the 1976 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best American Play. It was also nominated for a 1977 Tony Award as Best Play.

Robert Altman directed a movie version of the play.

Rabe's other plays include The Basic Training of Pavlo Hummel, Goose and Tomtom, Those the River Keeps, The Orphan, A Question of Mercy, Sticks and Bones, Boom Boom Room and Hurlyburly.

Streamers plays Tuesday through Saturday evenings at 7:30 PM with Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday matinees at 2 PM.

The Laura Pels Theatre at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre is located in Manhattan at 111 West 46th Street.
