More Chances to Feel Dirty in Chicago; Dirty Dancing Gets Six Extra Weeks

By Kenneth Jones
16 Oct 2008

Broadway in Chicago announced Oct. 16 that the current pre-Broadway engagement of Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage, opening Oct. 19, will be extended six weeks, to Jan. 17, 2009, due to ticket demand.

Tickets for the newly announced performances from Dec. 9, 2008 to Jan. 17, 2009, will go on sale Monday, Oct. 20 at 10 AM. The international stage hit, produced by Jacobsen Entertainment in association with Lionsgate and Magic Hour Productions, is currently playing the Cadillac Palace Theatre (151 West Randolph Street). After Jan. 17, 2009, the production moves to The Boston Opera House, Feb. 7-March 15, 2009. It plays L.A. in the spring. Broadway dates have not been announced.

Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage is a "coming-of-age love story involving the talented and headstrong dancer Johnny Castle (Josef Brown) and Frances 'Baby' Houseman (Amanda Leigh Cobb)," according to production notes. "During her family's summer vacation at the popular Kellerman's resort, Baby, a doctor's daughter with dreams of joining the Peace Corps, meets Johnny, the guy from the wrong side of the tracks. Against all odds, they fall in love, learning life-changing lessons along the way."

The stage show (adapted by screenwriter Eleanor Bergstein) is a live re-imagining of the hit film. It "combines all the intensity and excitement of live theatre with new songs, new scenes, and thrilling new dances."

The creative team includes director James Powell with choreography by Kate Champion. The team also includes Stephen Brimson Lewis (set design), Jennifer Irwin (costume design), Tim Mitchell (lighting design), Bobby Aitken (sound design), Jon Driscoll (video and projection design), Craig Wilson (Latin and Ballroom dance choreographer) and Conrad Helfrich (musical supervisor).
