LaBute's Fat Pig to Close at London's Comedy Theatre Nov. 29

By Mark Shenton
06 Nov 2008

Neil LaBute's Fat Pig, which transferred from the Trafalgar Studios to the Comedy Theatre on Sept. 11, will end its run there Nov. 29.

The play currently stars Kevin Bishop, Nicholas Burns, Kelly Brook and Katie Kerr.

The play revolves around the developing relationship of Tom (Burns) and the plus-sized Helen (Kerr), much to the consternation of Tom's work colleagues Carter (Bishop) and Jeannie (Brook), the latter of whom he has previously dated. Bishop is the star of Channel 4's "The Kevin Bishop Show," and he has also starred in the Channel 4 comedy sketch shows "Dogface," "Spoons" and "Star Stories." His BBC credits include "Hotel Babylon," "Love Soup," "According to Bex," "In Deep," "Casualty," "Dangerfield," "Silent Witness" and "My Family."

Burns has starred on television in "Benidorm," "Absolute Power," "Man Stroke Woman" and in the title role of "Nathan Barley." His London stage work includes The Madness of George Dubya and The Libertine.

Brook recently took part in "Strictly Come Dancing" on BBC 1, is an English model, actress and TV presenter who topped the "FHM 100 Sexiest Women in the World 2005" list. She graced the covers of GQ, FHM, Sky, Cosmopolitan, Tatler, The Face and Company by the age of 16. She was a presenter of Channel 4's "Big Breakfast," followed by a stint as host of MTV's "Select." Onstage, she has appeared in Eye Contact at the Riverside Studios in London, and her films include "The Italian Job," "Deuce Bigelow: European Gigolo" and "Sorted."

Kerr made her professional debut in the Menier Chocolate Factory's production of Little Shop of Horrors, subsequently transferring with it to the Duke of York's.

Fat Pig is directed by the playwright. LaBute's previous plays to be seen in London include bash: latter-day plays, The Mercy Seat, The Distance from Here and The Shape of Things, all first produced at the Almeida, and Some Girl(s), seen at the Gielgud Theatre in 2005. The Almeida will also offer the U.K. premiere of LaBute's In a Dark House (first seen at MCC in New York last year), opening on Nov. 27 (following previews from Nov. 20). His feature films include "In the Company of Men," "Your Friends and Neighbors," "Nurse Betty," "Possession" and a film version of "The Shape of Things."

Fat Pig was originally produced at New York's Lucille Lortel Theatre in 2004 under the auspices of MCC Theatre, the Off-Broadway company who recently also produced LaBute's latest play, reasons to be pretty. Fat Pig is produced in London by Ambassador Theatre Group's Howard Panter; Broadway producer Barry Weissler, who is currently represented in the West End and on Broadway by his production of Chicago; and Anna Waterhouse.
