Variety reports that Universal has acquired the rights to the film adaptation of the Tony-winning musical, which continues to play to capacity crowds at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, who co-stars in the show and also penned its Tony-winning score, is expected to reprise his role as Usnavi in the movie musical. Miranda will also produce the film with Meryl Poster, according to the industry paper. Kevin McCollum, Jeffrey Seller and Jill Furman, who produced the Broadway production, will executive produce the motion picture.
Quiara Alegria Hudes, who penned the In the Heights book, will write the silver-screen adaptation. Poster told Variety, "[In the Heights] is a timeless Everyman story that has a universal appeal."
In the Heights, according to press notes, "is about a vibrant and tight-knit community at the top of the island of Manhattan. The music pulses with the hopes and dreams of three generations as they struggle to forge an identity in a neighborhood on the brink of transition."
Tony Award nominee Thomas Kail directed the Broadway run; Alex Lacamoire is music director.
