Following its box-office success with the film of Mamma Mia!, Universal Pictures has set its sights on another Broadway favorite, the Tony-winning musical In the Heights.

Variety reports that Universal has acquired the rights to the film adaptation of the Tony-winning musical, which continues to play to capacity crowds at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

Lin-Manuel Miranda, who co-stars in the show and also penned its Tony-winning score, is expected to reprise his role as Usnavi in the movie musical. Miranda will also produce the film with Meryl Poster, according to the industry paper. Kevin McCollum, Jeffrey Seller and Jill Furman, who produced the Broadway production, will executive produce the motion picture.

Quiara Alegria Hudes, who penned the In the Heights book, will write the silver-screen adaptation. Poster told Variety, "[In the Heights] is a timeless Everyman story that has a universal appeal."

In the Heights, according to press notes, "is about a vibrant and tight-knit community at the top of the island of Manhattan. The music pulses with the hopes and dreams of three generations as they struggle to forge an identity in a neighborhood on the brink of transition."

The musical won four 2008 Tony Awards including Best Musical. Lin-Manuel Miranda won the 2008 Tony for Best Music and Lyrics, Andy Blankenbuehler won the 2008 Tony for Best Choreography, and Alex Lacamoire and Bill Sherman won the 2008 Tony Award for Best Orchestrations. The book is by Pulitzer Prize finalist and Tony Award nominee Quiara Alegría Hudes, and conceived by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Tony Award nominee Thomas Kail directed the Broadway run; Alex Lacamoire is music director.
