Feldshuh Revisits Golda's Balcony for NJ Audiences Nov. 15

By Andrew Gans
15 Nov 2008

Tovah Feldshuh

Four-time Tony nominee Tovah Feldshuh, who is currently starring Off-Broadway in the critically acclaimed Irena's Vow, reprises her work as Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir for New Jersey audiences Nov. 15.

Feldshuh stars in William Gibson's Golda Balcony at the State Theatre in New Brunswick, NJ, at 3 and 8:30 PM. Scott Schwartz is the production consultant; a Q&A session with Feldshuh will follow the matinee performance.

(There is no performance of Irena's Vow Nov. 15.)

Schwartz's production, which originated at Manhattan Ensemble Theatre in 2003, opened at Broadway's Helen Hayes Theatre in October 2003, where it ran for 493 performances until Jan. 2, 2005, making it the longest-running one-woman show in Broadway history.

Feldshuh plays legendary former Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, a Milwaukee schoolteacher who became Israeli's fourth PM in 1969. From the pogroms of Russia to the halls of the Knesset, Meir's life encapsulates the story of the birth of Israel in the wake of the Holocaust.

Feldshuh, who created the title role of Yentl in a 1975 Broadway stage production of Isaac Bashevis Singer's story, has also appeared on Broadway in the 1973 musical Cyrano, the 1974 comedy Dreyfus in Rehearsal, the revue Rodgers & Hart in 1975, the 1979 musical Sarava, and the comedy Lend Me a Tenor in 1990. She also took her Tony-nominated performance in Golda's Balcony to Los Angeles and London. On television, she has appeared in the miniseries "Holocaust," for which she received an Emmy nomination, and played defense attorney Danielle Melnick in "Law and Order," receiving another Emmy nod. She had a leading role in the Hollywood film "Kissing Jessica Stein."

Gibson's other plays include The Miracle Worker, Two for the Seesaw, A Cry of Players, Golda, The Butterfingers Angel, Monday After the Miracle, Goodly Creatures and Handy Dandy.

The State Theatre is located at 15 Livingston Avenue in New Brunswick. For tickets visit www.statetheatrenj.org.
