Taratula Will Inhabit Heche in Premiere of Call Me Anne

By Adam Hetrick
14 Nov 2008

Stage and screen actress Anne Heche is the subject of Phillip Taratula's new one-man show Call Me Anne, which will play a limited engagement at the Access Theater in December.

Call Me Anne marks Taratula's playwrighting debut. Broadway actor Matt McGrath (Cabaret, A Streetcar Named Desire) will direct Taratula in the solo work, which begins previews Dec. 2 and continues through Dec. 21; opening is Dec. 5.

According to press notes, "Taratula takes the audience on Anne's spiritual journey, set against a showbiz backdrop where only the strongest egos survive. A dizzy and hilarious trip, Call Me Anne is a brutally funny look at identity and ambition… As the explosive controversy over a widely publicized love affair with Ellen Degeneres turned her into tabloid fodder, Heche heard the voice of God ringing in her ears. He said that she was His daughter Celestia, and He told her of the earthly tasks she must perform before her ascension into Heaven."

Heche is known for her roles in "Donnie Brasco," "Wag the Dog" and "Six Days Seven Nights," as well as the Broadway productions of Proof and Twentieth Century.

Call Me Anne has set design by Kenneth Grady Barker, sound design by Palmer Hefferan, video design by Ned Stressen Reuter and choreography by Laura Sheehy.

Phillip Taratula's stage credits include Two Gentlemen of Verona, White Noise, A Lightening of Fireflies, The Rose Tattoo and Romance/Romance.

Presented by Access Theater and Blue Coyote Theater Group, tickets for Call Me Anne are available by phoning (212) 868-4444 or by visiting Smarttix.

The Access Theater is located at 380 Broadway in Manhattan.
