Tony Winner Cariou to Direct New Musical Rob Roy

By Andrew Gans
14 Nov 2008

Len Cariou

Tony Award winner Len Cariou will direct a new musical based on the legendary Scottish hero Rob Roy MacGregor in 2009.

Rob Roy The Musical, according to the show's official website, will begin performances at Chicago's Arie Crown Theater Feb. 3, 2009, with an official opening Feb. 8. Performances will continue through March 15.

Cariou will direct George Masswohl in the title role with Susan Gilmour as his wife Mary and David Dunbar as Rob Roy's nemesis, the Duke of Montrose. The production will also boast a supporting cast of 22 actors and a 10-person orchestra.

Rob Roy The Musical features a book and score by David Warrack of the Canada Pops Orchestra. The new musical, press notes state, "tells the tale of the famous Highlander from his days as a peaceful clan leader through his difficulties with the abrasive Duke of Montrose. Rob Roy MacGregor is branded as an outlaw due to a business transaction which bore all the signs of a set-up. This all took place at a pivotal time in Scottish history, when the Scots hoped to finally break free from King George I and follow what they believed was their true destiny. Rob Roy in his flight from the law yet captured many times, always managed to escape while becoming a hero to the Scots."

The musical made its world premiere in 2006 at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Len Cariou won a Tony Award for his performance in the title role of Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd. He also received Tony nominations for his work in Applause and A Little Night Music. Cariou's other Broadway credits include Proof, The Dinner Party, Teddy & Alice, Dance a Little Closer, Cold Storage, Don’t Call Back, Night Watch and King Henry V.

Tickets are available by calling the Arie Crown Theater box office at (312) 279-6190 or by visiting www.ticketmaster.com. The Arie Crown Theater is located in Lakeside Center at McCormick Place, 2301 S. Lake Shore Drive, Chicago.
