An Evening of Theater: Three Short Plays is the title of the upcoming Cause Célèbre event that will benefit the Museum of the History of Polish Jews.

The Jan. 14, 2009, evening will be held in Manhattan at The Players Club. The three short plays that will comprise the evening include Arthur Miller's The Performance, Bertolt Brecth's The Jewish Wife and Susan Charlotte's Someone's Knocking At the Door.

Joan Copeland, sister of playwright Miller, will star in The Performance, which, according to press notes, "revolves around a tap dancer who is rather down and out and then receives an offer to perform in front of one of the most powerful people in the world. The dancer accepts the offer, not knowing who that person is."

Tony Award winner Marian Seldes will perform Brecht's Jewish Wife, "which opens with the following stage directions: 'It is evening. A woman is packing.' And so begins this extraordinary two-character play. This little gem shares similar themes with Brecht's full-length masterpiece, Mother Courage, a woman, trying to remain brave as she finds herself making pain-staking choices. Only seven pages in length, its brevity is deceiving. High stakes, heart-breaking choices, this material could fill volumes."

Charlotte's Someone's Knocking At the Door, press notes state, "revolves around an older Jewish woman, originally from Europe, who moved to America as a child. Recently she has been awakened by a recurring dream — someone is knocking at the door. Every night she believes the dream is real. Every night she goes to the door, opens it, only to discover that no one is there."

Antony Marsellis will direct the evening, which begins with a reception at 6 PM. A museum presentation will follow the performances.

The Players is located in Manhattan at 16 Gramercy Park South, East 20th Street between Park Avenue and Irving Street. For tickets, priced $100, call (646) 366-9340 or email info@foodforthoughtproductions.com.
