A New Boy Will Head to London's Trafalgar Studios in March 2009

By Mark Shenton
18 Nov 2008

New Boy, a stage adaptation of William Sutcliffe's 1996 novel that first premiered at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2000, will be revived in 2009 in the West End.

Performances will begin at the West End's Trafalgar Studios 2 March 17, 2009, prior to an official opening March 19. The limited engagement will run through April 11.

Original adapter/director Russell Labey revisits and will again direct this story of a schoolboy crush, with a cast that features Nicholas Hoult, Mel Giedroyc and Ciara Janson.

In the story, based on author Sutcliffe's own public-school experiences at Havberdashers' Aske's School, revolves around Mark, who starts the sixth form knowing that this is his last chance to impress – to be more popular, more obnoxious, the best informed about gynaecology. The mesmerizingly good-looking new boy Barry seems to be having trouble making friends. Everyone is afraid of him. He could be the perfect ally in Mark's mission to enhance his social status.

Hoult is best known for his starring role as Tony in E4's teen TV drama "Skins" and has also appeared with Hugh Grant in "About A Boy, "Kidulthood," "The Weather Man" with Nicolas Cage, and the BAFTA-nominated "Coming Down the Mountain." Giedroyc, who recently starred in the West End production of Eurovision, is also one-half of the comedy duo Mel and Sue. Janson is best known for playing Nicole Owen in the TV series "Hollyoaks" for three years. The cast also features Gregg Lowe and Phil Matthews.

Labey previously directed Discotivity (Edinburgh Fringe) and Days of Hope (King's Head), and won the TMA Aawrd for Best New Musical for his version of Whistle Down the Wind that he directed and adapted. He was resident director on the West End productions of Sunset Boulevard and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

New Boy is produced by Jason Haight-Ellery and Stuart Piper.
