Theo Allyn Will Return to Role She Created for Florida Premiere, Mezzulah, 1946

By Kenneth Jones
19 Nov 2008

Casting has been announced for the second regional production of Michele Lowe's Mezzulah, 1946, a play-with-music about women factory workers during World War II — and their status following the war — running Dec. 10-Jan. 18, 2009, at Florida Stage in Manalapan, FL.

Producing director Louis Tyrrell stages the play, "set in a post-WWII Boeing factory" and focusing on Mezzulah, "a girl who becomes a woman who finds her voice and her heartbeat in a world of men — and discovers the true power of women."

Opening night is Dec. 12.

The cast features Theo Allyn (who originated the title role in the world premiere at Pittsburgh's City Theatre) as Mezzulah; Scott Borish (Florida Stage's world premiere production of Deborah Zoe Laufer's End Days); Kevin Cutts (Off-Broadway's Fifth of July); James Denvil (The Shakespeare Theatre Company, Olney Theatre Center, Everyman Theatre, Folger Theatre, Signature Theatre, Alabama Shakespeare Festival); Anthony Giaimo (Coconut Grove Playhouse's Death Defying Acts, The Rothschilds, Rags and Master Class); Deborah Hazlett (Olney Theatre Center, Syracuse Stage, Signature Theatre, The Shakespeare Theatre Company, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company); David Michael Holmes (a founding member of Toy Box Theatre Company in New York City); Blair Sams (Florida Stage's Hanging Fire and The Gulf of Westchester, Broadway's The Dinner Party); Erin Joy Schmidt (MIXTAPE at Mad Cat Theatre Company, where she is an acting company member); Beth Wittig (Blackbird at Hartford Theaterworks).

Lowe's plays include Broadway's The Smell of the Kill and Florida's Stage's String of Pearls, which earlier received an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination for its Primary Stages world premiere in New York City. Other plays include Backsliding in the Promised Land, Map of Heaven, Good on Paper and Hit the Lights!

Mezzulah, 1946, according to production notes, "is the story a young woman (Mezzulah) who, like many women of her time, answered the call when they were asked to go to work in the plants and factories of our country in the midst of WWII, in this case, the Boeing Airplane plant. As the war has ended and the men return from battle, the women are thanked for their service and told to go home, the men will now take over again. But young Mezzulah has other ideas. She does not want to return home. Her imagination has been fired and she will not be denied. She will find her place in this world and make her dreams and visions come true."

Mezzulah, 1946 is billed as "a play with music, and includes some of the most memorable songs and music of the time performed a cappella by the actors in the play."

Tickets can be purchased by calling the Florida Stage box office at (561) 585-3433 or (800) 514-3837 (outside of Palm Beach County). You can also purchase tickets online at www.floridastage.org.
