Groff Will Not Reprise Role of Claude for Broadway's Hair Revival

Jonathan Groff, the Spring Awakening Tony nominee who had originated the role of Claude in the Public Theater's recent stagings of Hair, will not reprise that role when the production arrives at Broadway's Al Hirschfeld Theatre in February 2009.

Groff, who is currently starring Off-Broadway in Prayer for My Enemy, "is not available for the transfer of Hair to Broadway," according to a spokesperson for the musical.

The acclaimed singing actor had also been unable to complete this summer's extended run of Hair due to previous commitments. Christopher J. Hanke succeeded Groff at the outdoor Delacorte Theater. No Broadway casting has been announced.

As previously reported, the tribal love rock musical will begin performances at the Hirschfeld Feb. 13, 2009 and will officially open March 5, 2009. The latest production, inspired by the Public Theater's 40th anniversary concert staging in Central Park in the fall of 2007, was remounted by the Public this past summer, opening to a host of positive reviews and ultimately extending three times at the Delacorte Theater.

Tickets, ranging in price from $37-$122, will go on sale to the general public Dec. 6. Hair will play the following performance schedule: Tuesdays at 7 PM, Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8 PM, Saturdays at 2 PM and 8 PM; and Sundays at 2 PM and 7:30 PM.

Hair, written by James Rado, Gerome Ragni and Galt MacDermot, has direction by Diana Paulus and features choreography by Karole Armitage (Passing Strange).

"With a score including such enduring musical numbers as 'Let the Sun Shine In,' 'Aquarius,' 'Hair' and 'Good Morning Starshine,' Hair depicts the birth of a cultural movement in the 60's and 70's that changed America forever: the musical follows a group of hopeful, free-spirited young people who advocate a lifestyle of pacifism and free-love in a society riddled with intolerance and brutality during the Vietnam War. As they explore sexual identity, challenge racism, experiment with drugs and burn draft cards, the 'tribe' in Hair creates an irresistible message of hope, peace and change that continues to resonate with audiences 40 years later," state press notes for the Broadway revival.
