"Send in the Clowns": A Little Night Music Revival Begins London Run Nov. 22

| photo by Catherine Ashmore | The Menier Chocolate Factory's production of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler's A Little Night Music begins performances Nov. 22 prior to an official opening Dec. 3. The limited engagement is scheduled to play through March 8, 2009.
Trevor Nunn direct a cast that includes Hannah Waddingham as Desiree, Maureen Lipman as her mother Madame Armfeldt, Alex Hanson as her former lover Fredrik, Jessie Buckley as Fredrik's virginal wife Anne, Gabriel Vick as Fredrik's son Henrik, Kaisa Hammarlund as the maid Petra and Alistair Robins as Count Carl-Magnus. They are joined by John Addison, Florence Andrews, Laura Armstrong, Lynden Edwards, Charlotte Page and Nicola Sloane.
The creative team also includes Lynne Page (choreography), David Farley (designs), Hartley T A Kemp (lighting), Caroline Humphris (musical supervision) and Jason Carr (orchestrations).
Waddingham was London's original The Lady of the Lake when Monty Python's Spamalot first opened at the West End's Palace Theatre, and she subsequently re-created her performance in the Broadway run at the Shubert Theatre. Other West End credits include The Beautiful Game, Tonight's the Night and Lautrec.
Hanson recently played Otto in Marguerite at the Theatre Royal, Haymarket, and before that was Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music.
Lipman, a veteran of stage and screen, played Aunt Eller in Nunn's original production of Oklahoma! at the National, and starred in Glorious at the Duchess Theatre. Most recently she was seen onstage at the Chichester Festival Theatre in The Cherry Orchard.
Hammurlund was recently seen in Cabaret at the Lyric and was in the Menier's production of Sunday in the Park with George at both the Chocolate Factory and its subsequent transfer to the West End's Wyndham's.
Robins has appeared in Richard II at the Old Vic and As You Like It and Cymbeline for the RSC.
Vick recently played the roles of Princeton and Rod in the West End production of Avenue Q and has also appeared in Cabaret at the Lyric.
A Little Night Music — featuring a score by Sondheim and a book by Wheeler — originally opened at Broadway's Shubert Theatre on Feb. 25, 1973, with a cast that included Glynis Johns as Desiree, Len Cariou as Fredrik and Hermione Gingold as Madame Armfeldt. The show, directed by Harold Prince, garnered five 1973 Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical. The Sondheim score features the composer's best-known tune, "Send in the Clowns," as well as "Every Day a Little Death," "The Miller's Son" and "A Weekend in the Country."
