Party Will Launch Natalie Toro's New Show Tune CD Nov. 23 in NYC

Natalie Toro, who recently played the bloodthirsty Madame Defarge in Broadway's A Tale of Two Cities, will sing at a Nov. 23 CD release party at the Canal Room in Manhattan, celebrating her new self-titled solo album featuring fresh takes on beloved show tunes.

The 12-track disc, available Nov. 23 on natalietoro.com, cdbaby.com and at digital outlets, includes the work of a handful of New York's hottest arrangers. Toro calls the new recording "a Broadway CD with a twist."

"Sometimes when I listen to solo discs there is a sameness to the sound because only one arranger is used," Toro told Playbill. She said the album will have a handcrafted feel because she collaborated with seven different arrangers. "I was able to sit with each arranger and talk about my ideas," Toro said.

Don't expect standard-issue versions of Broadway classics.

"Something's Coming" from West Side Story, for example, has an Andrews Sisters vibe to it, as arranged by David Loud (with Toro tripling her voice); and arranger Chino Nuñez brings a contemporary New York City street soundscape to Stephen Sondheim's "Another Hundred People" (expect car horns, crowds and more).

Tony Award winner Sutton Foster (Shrek) duets with Toro on a bonus track that re-creates the Barbra Streisand/Judy Garland duet of "Happy Days Are Here Again"/"Get Happy." Matt Perri did the arrangement.

For fans of A Tale of Two Cities, Toro recorded Ed Kessel's arrangement of "Out of Sight, Out of Mind," her big number from the romantic historical musical (with songs by Jill Santoriello), which closed on Broadway Nov. 9.

The release party for the disc will be 7:30 PM Nov. 23 at Canal Room at Canal and West Broadway in the East Village. Toro will sing a selection of songs from the CD (titled "Natalie Toro"), and sign discs. There is no cover charge; expect "dancing, singing, fun giveaways, door prizes and world-class performances."

Toro has appeared in Broadway's Les Misérables and Madison Square Garden's A Christmas Carol musical. Other credits include Zombie Prom (Off-Broadway), the national tours of Evita (20th anniversary tour, Jeff Award nomination), Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar and regional productions of The Fix, Everything's Ducky, Francis of Guernica, Blood Brothers and Zorba.
