McArdle, Gershon and Rudetsky to Fete Charles Strouse Dec. 3

By Adam Hetrick
01 Dec 2008

Tony Award-winning composer Charles Strouse will be joined by his original Broadway Annie, Andrea McArdle, Dec. 3 at the Broadway Concierge and Ticket Center.

The 12 PM tribute, entitled "All About Annie," will feature an interview with the composer of the musical about the red-headed orphan, as well as a performance from Tony nominee McArdle, whose name became synonymous with the role after starring in the original 1977 Broadway production.

Seth Rudetsky will also be on hand to capture "All About Annie" as part of his radio show on Sirius XM Radio. Rudetsky will chat with both Strouse and McArdle about their experiences with the beloved musical.

In addition, Music Theatre International Chairman and CEO Freddie Gershon will present Strouse — in honor of Strouse's 80th birthday — with a book of fan letters penned by young cast members of Annie from around the world.

Since the conclusion of its six-year original Broadway run, Annie has received over 20,000 productions worldwide, including runs in South Africa, Hong Kong, India, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates. The musical continues to tour the United States and is one of the most demanded productions for licensing from Music Theatre International.

Annie was adapted for the screen in 1982 starring Aileen Quinn, Carol Burnett, Albert Finney, Ann Reinking and Bernadette Peters, and again for television in 1999, featuring Alicia Morton, Kathy Bates, Audra McDonald, Victor Garber, Alan Cumming, Kristin Chenoweth and Andrea McArdle in a cameo as the Star-to-Be.

Charles Strouse won Best Score Tony Awards for Annie and Applause. He has also penned the scores for Bye Bye Birdie, Applause, "It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's Superman!", Bring Back Birdie, Annie Warbucks, Golden Boy, A Broadway Musical, I and Albert, Charlie and Algernon, Rags, Dance a Little Closer and All American. His memoir, "Put on a Happy Face," is currently available from Sterling Publishing.
