42nd Street, Camelot and Forum Will Play Goodspeed Opera House in 2009

Goodspeed Musicals will produce 42nd Street, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum and a revised revival of Camelot at the Goodspeed Opera House in 2009, executive director Michael P. Price announced Dec. 4.

In an uncertain economy, there is nothing risky about the popular titles that will play the historic East Haddam, CT, venue: Two bright musical comedies and a darkly romantic fantasy (Camelot). All three shows boast tunes that are part of the public imagination. "Shuffle Off to Buffalo," anyone? "Comedy Tonight"? "If Ever I Would Leave You"?

Here's the 2009 Goodspeed rundown:

  • The Broadway song and dance extravaganza 42nd Street, April 17-June 28, 2009. The backstage tale based on the Warner Bros. picture has music by Harry Warren, lyrics by Al Dubin, and book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble. Ray Roderick directs, Rick Conant choreographs.

  • Tony Award-winning Camelot, with book revisions by lyricist-librettist Alan Jay Lerner's son, Michael, and direction by Rob Ruggiero, July 10–Sept. 19, 2009. The score is by composer Frederick Loewe and lyricist Lerner. The musical version of the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table is adapted from the T.H. White novel "The Once and Future King."

Stephen Sondheim, Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart's ancient Rome-set musical comedy, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, directed and choreographed by Ted Pappas, who is a Goodspeed veteran who now serves as producing artistic director of Pittsburgh Public Theater, Sept. 25–Nov. 29, 2009.

Advance season subscriptions are now on sale at (860) 873-8668 or at www.goodspeed.org.

Single tickets go on public sale beginning Feb. 22, 2009.

Shows for Goodspeed Musicals' developmental home, the Norma Terris Theatre in Chester, CT, are expected to be announced in 2009.

Dedicated to the preservation and advancement of musical theatre, Goodspeed Musicals produces three musicals each season at the Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, Conn., and additional productions at The Norma Terris Theatre, which was opened in 1984 for the development of new musicals. The only regional theatre to receive two Tony Awards (for outstanding achievement), Goodspeed also maintains The Scherer Library of Musical Theatre and The Max Showalter Center for Education in the Musical Theater.
