White Noise: A Cautionary Musical Aiming for Broadway in 2009

By Adam Hetrick
05 Dec 2008

MacKenzie Mauzy

White Noise, the "cautionary musical" about a white separatist singing duo who make their way to the Top 40 charts, is aiming for a Broadway bow in 2009.

Brooklyn producer Mitchell Maxwell, in association with Sibling Theatricals, Holly Way and Company, Robert Barandes and Jay Cardwell, will produce the musical, which is looking toward a Broadway debut in September 2009. Prior to New York, industry presentations of the musical will be offered in New Orleans Dec. 5 with a limited run at University of New Orleans' Thrust Theater in June 2009.

Featuring a book by Matte O'Brien and music and lyrics by Joe Drymala, White Noise — which was conceived by Ryan J. Davis — will also be directed by producer Maxwell and will feature choreography by Donald Byrd (The Color Purple).

In addition to a Drymala's score, the new musical features contributions from songwriters Glen Kelly; Laurence O'Keefe (Legally Blonde); Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (Edges); Joe Shane; Robert Morris and Steven Morris; Eric Svejcar; and Sharon Vaughn.

The musical, which is currently being developed at the University of New Orleans, was inspired by the true-life story of "Nazi folk twins" Lynx and Lamb Gaede of the band Prussian Blue. White Noise began life in an award-winning extended run at the 2006 New York Musical Theatre Festival.

The cast for the New Orleans presentation comprises MacKenzie Mauzy (A Tale of Two Cities) and Patti Murin (Xanadu) as the twins, with Patrick Cummings (Happiness), Adam Halpin (Glory Days), Carla Harting (Dead Man's Cell Phone), Rodney Hicks (Rent), Michael O'Keefe (Sideman), Dennis White ("Seventh Son," "Miracle's Boys") and Brandon Williams (Blood Brothers).

Press notes for White Noise state, "Eva and Kady Siller have established a small following as folk singers promoting messages of white power. They are discovered by a powerful New York manager who convinces them that they can penetrate the world of mainstream rock/pop, dramatically increasing their power, by simply coding the lyrics to their hate songs. Indeed, powerful packaging and a passive public are a dangerous combination.

Frighteningly entertaining, White Noise is a parable for our times, exposing a hateful reality to which we are immune. Designed to educate audiences about the inadvertent dangers of extremism and its mainstream penetration, White Noise asks riveting questions of each of us and offers a glimmer of hope into our future."
