Blum and Hogan Will Join Taylor and Malone for Off-Broadway's Mourning Becomes Electra

By Ernio Hernandez

Mark Blum, Robert Hogan, Phoebe Strole and more will join the previously announced Lili Taylor and Jena Malone in The New Group's upcoming Off-Broadway revival of Eugene O'Neill's Mourning Becomes Electra.

New Group artistic director Scott Elliott will stage the work, which is scheduled to begin previews Jan. 27, 2009, and officially open Feb. 19 at The Acorn @ Theatre Row. The run plays through April 18.

O'Neill sets his trilogy of plays (based on Aeschylus' The Oresteia) in a New England town "at the end of the Civil War," according to show notes. "When General Ezra Mannon and his son Orin return home [they] find their family in strife and the home they've been pining for torn apart."

Joining the previously announced Malone and Taylor will be Carolyn Baeumler (Heddatron), Joseph Cross (Landscape of The Body), Anson Mount (Cymbeline), Mark Blum (Twelve Angry Men, The Music Teacher), Robert Hogan (Hamlet, The Accomplices), Phoebe Strole (Spring Awakening), Patrick Mapel (The Bacchae), Therese Barbato (Prometheus Bound), Geoffrey Bryant (The Bride of Olneyville Square), Susan Goodwillie, Mycah Hogan (The Wendy Complex), Sean Meehan (Sins of the Mother) and John Wojda (Esctasy).

Robert Hogan replaces the previously announced John Cullum (Urinetown, Shenandoah), who is currently starring in August: Osage County.

Screen star Malone ("Saved," "Donnie Darko") — previously seen on stage in Broadway's Doubt — will appear in the role of Lavinia Mannon.

A New Group veteran of Aunt Dan and Lemon, Taylor will play Christine Mannon. The actress, known for her screen work in "Mystic Pizza," "I Shot Andy Warhol," "High Fidelity" and "Six Feet Under," has also been seen on stage in Landscape of the Body and Three Sisters.

The design team includes Derek McLane (set), Susan Hilferty (costume), Jason Lyons (lighting) and Shane Rettig (sound).

The New Group opened its season with Kevin Elyot's Mouth to Mouth and will conclude with Seth Rosenfeld's Handball (starting April 27, 2009, and opening May 14).
