Clarke's Garden of Earthly Delights Extends to March 2009

By Andrew Gans
and Adam Hetrick
20 Dec 2008

Martha Clarke's Garden of Earthly Delights, the acclaimed staging of the Hieronymus Bosch triptych, has extended its run at Off-Broadway's Minetta Lane Theatre.

Garden, which opened at the Off-Broadway venue Nov. 19, had been scheduled to run through Jan. 18, 2009. The New York Times reports that the production will now play through March 1, 2009.

The 70-minute production — featuring movement, music and aerial effects — brings to life Hieronymus Bosch's densely populated painting, depicting "the progression of sin from creation to hell, as well as a journey from innocence to chaos," according to press notes.

The cast includes Sophie Bortolussi, Benjamin G. Bowman, Daniel Clifton, Marjorie Folkman, General McArthur Hambrick (Cats), Whitney V. Hunter, Gabby Malone, Jennifer Nugent, Matt Rivera (Movin' Out), Jenny Sandler, Isadora Wolfe. Musicians for the production include Wayne Hankin (winds), Egil Rostad (cello) and Arthur Solari (music director, percussion).

"Its visceral theatricality presents an astonishing spectrum of human experience and emotion. Garden of Earthly Delights, with its eroticism and apocalyptic vision, is certainly as meaningful today as when Bosch created it," Clarke said in a statement.

Featuring a Drama Desk Award-winning score by Richard Peaslee, Garden has scenic and lighting design by Tony Award winner Christopher Akerlind, costume design by Tony nominee Jane Greenwood and aerial design provided by Flying By Foy.

Tickets for Garden of Earthly Delights, ranging $40-$69.50, are available by phoning (212) 307-4100 or by visiting Ticketmaster. $25-$30 rush seats will be available at the box office for same-day tickets.

The Minetta Lane Theatre is located at 18 Minetta Lane in Greenwich Village.
