Hughes, Walsh, Jensen, Romano and Gerrard Set for Ragtime at Astoria Performing Arts Center

Casting has been announced for the Astoria Performing Arts Center's production of Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens' Tony-winning musical Ragtime, which will begin performances Feb. 5, 2009.

APAC's newly appointed artistic director Tom Wojtunik will directs the production, which plays through Feb. 22, 2009, at the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Astoria, Queens.

The epic musical, based on the E.L. Doctorow novel, interweaves the stories of three distinct families with historical figures to offer a snapshot of America at the turn of the century.

The cast includes James Andrew Walsh (Father), Anna Lise Jensen (Mother), Ricky Oliver (Younger Brother), Daniel Henri Luttway (Little Boy), Richard Vernon (Grandfather), D. William Hughes (Coalhouse Walker, Jr.), Janine Ayn Romano (Sarah), Mark Gerrard (Tateh), Jordan Bloom (Little Girl), Matthew D. Brooks (Booker T. Washington), Carmel Javaher (Emma Goldman), Stacie Bono (Evelyn Nesbit), Jonathan Gregg (Harry Houdini), Michael Edward Baker (Admiral Peary), Joel Abels (Henry Ford), Nathan Brisby (J. P. Morgan) and Alex Pearlman (Willie Conklin) with Timothy G. Avant, Teanna Berry, Shawna M. Hamic, Marcie Henderson, Tyson Jennette, Vanessa Robinson, Gabriel Rodriguez and Emily Thompson.

The production will feature choreography by Ryan Kasprzak, musical direction by Daniel Feyer, set design by Michael P. Kramer, costume design by David Withrow, lighting design by Travis Walker and sound design by Kristyn R. Smith.

Ragtime has a book by Terrence McNally, music by Stephen Flaherty and lyrics by Lynn Ahrens. The musical opened on Broadway at the Ford Center for the Performing Arts Jan. 18, 1998, earning Tony Awards for Best Score, Best Book, Best Orchestrations and Best Featured Actress in a Musical for Audra McDonald.
