Two Versions of Virginia Woolf's Freshwater Are Combined for World Premiere in NYC; Cast Announced

By Adam Hetrick
05 Jan 2009

The Women's Project and SITI Company co-presentation of Virginia Woolf's comedy Freshwater, under the direction of Anne Bogart, will be a world premiere production Off-Broadway.

In preparation for the production of Woolf's only play (originally billed as the U.S. professional premiere), Women's Project producing artistic director Julie Crosby came across two versions of Freshwater, one from 1923 and another from 1935.

Finding strengths and weaknesses in both, Crosby was granted permission from Virginia Woolf's estate to create an amalgam of the two versions which will receive its premiere Off-Broadway beginning Jan. 15.

The premiere will officially open Jan. 25, and run through Feb. 15, at the Women's Project. Freshwater is described as "a theatrical escapade set in a Victorian garden on a summer evening. Woolf, who wrote this play for friends and family, creates a deliberately witty and wacky universe peopled with a tribe of artists, friends and lovers in a playful mood."

"The characters in Freshwater — Julia Cameron, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Ellen Terry and the others — had tremendous significance for the Bloomsbury Group, of which Woolf was a founding member," Bogart said in a statement. "In this production, our challenge will be to channel the humor, intelligence, talent and giddiness of the original Bloomsbury group and deliver it to a 2009 audience."

The cast includes Akiko Aizawa (Hotel Cassiopeia), Gian-Murray Gianino (Paradise Park), Ellen Lauren (Who Do You Think You Are), Kelly Maurer (Radio Macbeth), Tom Nelis (Iphegenia 2.0), Barney O'Hanlon (Who Do You Think You Are) and Stephen Duff Webber (Radio Macbeth).

Freshwater has designs by James Schuette (sets and costumes), Brian H. Scott (lights) and Darron L West (sound).
