Dawson Takes a Poke at Relationships in Toronto World Premiere Them & Us

By Kenneth Jones
06 Jan 2009

Four actors portray 30 characters in a series of vignettes that explore male-female relationships in the world premiere of actor-writer Tracy Dawson's Them & Us, opening Jan. 8 after previews from Jan. 6, in a production by Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto.

Dawson, Sarah Dodd, Michael Healey and Gray Powell appear in the dark comedy, directed by Ruth Madoc-Jones.

This is the first full-length play by acclaimed Second City alumnus Dawson. Performances play to Jan. 31 at Theatre Passe Muraille's Mainspace, 16 Ryerson Avenue, Toronto.

According to production notes, "With dark comedy and painful truths, it explores how and why we have such difficulty connecting with each other — how we try to get love, to control it, understand it. Relationships are hard. Both hilarious and heartbreaking, Dawson's play invites the audience into the lives of 30 characters…"

The creative team includes set and lighting designer Kimberly Purtell, wardrobe designer Jackie Chau and stage manager Andrew Dollar.

Dawson is an actor, writer, singer and comic who created the webseries "T&A," which The Globe & Mail's John Doyle called "adult, caustic and hilarious." Dawson got her start as a comedic writer-performer on the independent and alternative comedy/theatre scene in Toronto and quickly developed a reputation as a talented and dynamic sketch comedy performer, monologuist, stand-up comedienne and television actress. In 2009 Dawson performs in Andrew Lloyd Webber's new musical, The Boys in the Photograph, at the Manitoba Theatre Centre. Ben Elton will direct.
