Arthur Miller's Moral Drama Incident at Vichy Will Resurface in NYC March 8

The Actors Company Theatre/TACT is solidifying details for its March 8-April 11 Off-Broadway production of Arthur Miller's Incident at Vichy, which the company is calling the first major New York City production since its premiere in 1964.
The drama about men who are rounded up for questioning in Nazi-occupied France did have an Off-Off-Broadway production in 1981, by Jewish Rep.
Cast members of director Scott Alan Evans' new production will include TACT company members Jamie Bennett, Richard Ferrone, Todd Gearhart, Jack Koenig, Ron McClary, James Prendergast and Gregory Salata. The remaining cast of guest artists will be announced shortly.
TACT is the critically-acclaimed company dedicated to presenting "neglected or rarely produced plays of literary merit." Miller's 1964 drama, Incident at Vichy, is the playwright's "searing examination of the Holocaust."
Opening is March 16 at the Beckett Theatre in Theatre Row on West 42nd Street. (The dates of the run differ slightly from the season announcement in 2008.)
According to TACT, "A detention room in France during the German occupation is the setting for America's preeminent playwright to explore the themes of guilt and complicity with the forces of authority. In Incident at Vichy, ten men have been picked up for 'questioning.' As the men grapple with the fears, uncertainty and self-denial about the unspeakable fate that awaits them, Miller uniquely examines an historical period whose consequences continue to reverberate today."
Miller, a major American playwright of the 20th century, wrote Death of a Salesman (1949), The Crucible (1953), A View from the Bridge (1956) and All My Sons (1947), among other works. He died in 2005.
The creative team is comprised of Scott Bradley (sets), David Toser (costumes), Mary Louise Geiger (lights), Jill BC Du Boff (sound), Joseph Trapanesse (original music). Meredith Dixon is production stage manager.
Incident at Vichy was commissioned for Repertory Theatre of Lincoln Center and first directed by Harold Clurman. Its original stars were Joseph Wiseman, David Wayne and Hal Holbrook.
TACT performances will play Monday and Wednesday-Friday at 7:30 PM; Saturday at 2 PM & 8 PM; Sunday at 3 PM. TACT's celebrated company of actors was drawn together in 1992 by a love of the literature of the theatre. Since that time, they have grown to become a true ensemble: a group that has developed a common vocabulary and a technique based on their specific artistic vision and collective body of work. After presenting 13 seasons of "in-concert" performances, the company took a leap with its 2006-07 season by presenting fully staged productions of David Storey's Home and The Sea by Edward Bond at The Beckett Theatre on Theatre Row. TACT became a resident company on Theatre Row with its 2007-08 season when it presented The Runner Stumbles by Milan Stitt and The Eccentricities of a Nightingale by Tennessee Williams. The first production of the current season, Alan Ayckbourn's Bedroom Farce played an extended run.
Director Scott Alan Evans is co-artistic director and executive director of TACT (The Actors Company Theatre). For 15 years, Evans has led the company through steady growth, both artistically and financially and has directed over 60 of its productions (including the critically-acclaimed full productions of Home, The Sea and
The Runner Stumbles.
In May 2001, working closely with the Noel Coward Estate, Evans directed the world premiere Off-Broadway production of Noel Coward's Long Island Sound. Evans conceived, co-wrote and directed the world premiere production of The Triangle Factory Fire Project at the Clurman Theatre. Triangle has been published by the Dramatists Play Service and has gone on to see productions all over the country. He also wrote and directed the Off-Broadway musical, Goose! Beyond the Nursery, which received three Outer Critics Circle Award nominations including Best Off-Broadway Production.
