Casting Announced for Los Angeles Production of New Musical Pope Joan

By Andrew Gans
13 Jan 2009

Pope Joan, a new musical based on the enduring account of a young scholar's rise to the papacy, will begin previews at the Stellar Adler Theatre in Los Angeles Jan. 14.

Directed and choreographed by Bo Crowell, the production will officially open Jan. 16 and play through March 22. Michael Butler produces.

The cast includes Whitney Avalon (Joan), Douglas Barry (Louis II), Cristina Dohmen (Martine), Suzanne Nichols (Lucretia), Bryce Blue (Lucius), Allie Costa (Young Joan), Fernando Orozco, Jr. (Anastasius) and Anthony Gruppuso (Nicholas).

Pope Joan features book, lyrics and music by Christopher Moore.

"During a time marked by social chaos and political turmoil an unexpected pundit ascends the hierarchy of the most powerful regime in the world," according to Pope Joan press notes. "This innovative and dramatic musical account of the historic and ecclesiastical circumstances, which may have given a young girl access to the papacy, brings century old scandals to life once more."

The creative team also includes Randy Bowser (musical arrangements), Brian Murphy (musical direction), Shon LeBlanc (costume designer), Jeremy Pivnick (lighting designer), Diane Martinous (wig mistress) and Fernando Vasquez (sound engineer).

Show times are Thursdays-Saturdays at 8 PM and Sundays at 2 and 7 PM.

The Stella Adler Theatre is located at 6773 Hollywood Blvd. in Los Angeles, CA. For tickets, priced $34.99, call (323) 960-4412 or visit www.popejoantix.com.
