Donald Margulies' Shipwrecked! An Entertainment – The Amazing Adventures of Louis de Rougemont (As Told by Himself), starring Michael Countryman in the title role, officially opens Off-Broadway Feb. 8.
Lisa Peterson (The Model Apartment) directs the Primary Stages New York premiere, which began performances Jan. 27 at the company's home. The run is slated to run through March 7.
The Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Dinner With Friends penned the work, a "tale of adventure that left England spellbound in the 19th century," according to Primary Stages. Shipwrecked! follows "Louis de Rougemont, a would-be explorer, [who] invites you to hear his amazing story of bravery, survival and celebrity… [and] examines how far we're willing to blur the line between fact and fiction in order to leave our mark on the world."
Countryman (Night Must Fall, Dedication or The Stuff of Dreams) heads a cast that also features Donnetta Lavinia Grays (Well) as Player 1 and Jeremy Bobb (Is He Dead?) as Player 2.
Commissioned by South Coast Repertory, Shipwrecked! made its world premiere there in September 2007 starring Gregory Itzin (of television's "24"). Countryman starred in the recent Long Wharf Theatre production.
Primary Stages next presents the world premiere of Tina Howe's Chasing Manet (March 24-May 2) with Tony Award winner Jane Alexander and Lynn Cohen ("Sex and the City").
Tickets to Shipwrecked! at 59E59 Theaters (located at 59 East 59th Street, between Park and Madison Avenues) are available by calling (212) 279-4200. For more information visit primarystages.com.
