The musical mixes people and puppets, focusing on urban twentysomethings struggling to find love and "purpose" in a world that resembles a grown-up "Sesame Street." The show won the Best Musical Tony, as well as Best Book (Jeff Whitty) and Best Score (Robert Lopez and Jeff Marx). The Broadway run ended Sept. 13, after 2,534 performances, but the musical will make the unusual move (back) to Off-Broadway Oct. 9.
During the Broadway run, the original creative team and producers created an Equity Las Vegas sitdown and then an Equity tour, both of which ran their course. Jason Moore directs the non-Equity tour; Evan Ensign is associate director. Puppet design is by Rick Lyon. The work of the original design team will be represented.
The new tour cast of people and puppets includes Brent Michael DiRoma (Princeton, Rod), Tim Kornblum (Brian), Jacqueline Grabois (Kate Monster, Lucy The Slut & others), Jason Heymann (Nicky, Trekkie Monster, Bear & others) Lisa Helmi Johanson (Christmas Eve), Nigel Jamaal Clark (Gary Coleman), and Kerri Brackin (Mrs. T., Bear & others). Rounding out the cast are ensemble members Charles M. Baskerville, Ashley Eileen Bucknam, Joshua Holden, Julianna Lee and Zach Trimmer.
The tour will play markets including Scranton, PA, Bufalo, NY, New Haven, CT, Philadelphia, Ottawa, ON, Dallas, Atlanta, New Orleans and beyond. For the tour schedule, visit www.AvenueQonTour.com.
