Sher to Discuss Opera and Theatre Direction at "LIVE from the NYPL" Oct. 8

The "LIVE from the NYPL" series will present an evening with Tony Award-winning director Bartlett Sher, Metropolitan Opera general manager Peter Gelb and director Patrice Chéreau Oct. 8.

Paul Holdengräber will moderate the 7 PM discussion, which is entitled "Cognitive Theatre." The evening unites Gelb and previous Metropolitan Opera directors Sher, who staged Il Barbiere di Siviglia, and From the House of the Dead director Chéreau. The trio will discuss theatre, opera and the art of direction.

Bartlett Sher received a 2008 Tony Award for his direction of the Lincoln Center Theater revival of South Pacific. He earned Tony nominations for each of his other Broadway directorial outings, including Joe Turner's Come and Gone, The Light in the Piazza and Awake and Sing!

In addition to his work for the Broadway stage, Sher directed City Opera's Mourning Becomes Electra, as well as Prayer for My Enemy at Playwrights Horizons. He has been named the resident director of Lincoln Center Theater and will stage Offenbach’s Les Contes d’Hoffmann for the Met this season.
