Young, Jones, Evens, Ghebremichael, Ramirez Cast in North Carolina West Side Story

Principal casting has been announced for the North Carolina Theatre's upcoming production of the classic Stephen Sondheim-Arthur Laurents-Leonard Bernstein musical West Side Story.

Directed by Joshua Bergasse, the production will run Oct. 17-25 in the Raleigh Memorial Auditorium at the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts.

The cast will be headed by Josh Young as Tony, Catherine Cheng Jones as Maria, Leo Ash Evens as Riff, Asmeret Ghebremichael as Anita and Freddy Ramirez as Bernardo.

West Side Story, according to NCT, is a "modern adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. The backdrop of the story is Manhattan, Tony and Maria are Romeo and Juliet. These star-crossed lovers are caught amidst racial tensions and violence as they struggle to stay together."

West Side Story has music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Arthur Laurents. The Bernstein and Sondheim score features such classics of the American musical theatre as "Something's Coming," "Tonight," "America," "I Feel Pretty" and "Somewhere."
