The 2009 event comes 30 years after LGBT activists first marched on Washington in October 1979 to fight for equal rights. Activists are seeking marriage equality, adoption rights, workplace discrimination reform, hate crimes legislation, immigration reform, school anti-bullying policies as well as the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act and "Don't Ask, Don't Tell."
Tony nominated Hair cast member Gavin Creel, co-founder of Broadway Impact, is a key organizer for the New York component of the rally that has aligned with Tony-winning actresses Sutton Foster and Audra McDonald, as well as John Ellison Conlee (1776), Celia Keenan-Bolger (Spelling Bee), Jonathan Groff (Spring Awakening), Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Spelling Bee, "Modern Family"), Neil Patrick Harris ("How I Met Your Mother," Assassins), Christopher Sieber (Shrek), producer David Stone (Next to Normal, Wicked) and the casts of Hair and Memphis to sponsor free roundtrip buses to take individuals from New York to attend the event.
"The Public Theater has always aspired to make theatre that matters, that speaks to the great social issues of our time," Public Theater artistic director Oskar Eustis said in a previous statement. "Hair has never been just a show; its message of change and hope and inclusion is one we try to live, not just preach. This is the moment when we need to recognize the right of all citizens, gay and straight, to have their love and their unions acknowledged by the state. We are proud to join with Cleve Jones and the National Equality March in support of gay marriage. Peace now! Equality now! Justice forever!"
The cast of Hair features Tony nominee Will Swenson as Berger, Tony nominee Gavin Creel as Claude, Sasha Allen as Dionne, Caissie Levy as Sheila, Allison Case as Crissy, Kacie Sheik as Jeanie, Bryce Ryness as Woof, Darius Nichols as Hud, Megan Lawrence as Mother, Andrew Kober as Margaret Mead/Dad, as well as Ato Blankson-Wood, Steel Burkhardt, Jackie Burns, Briana Carlson-Goodman, Lauren Elder, Allison Guinn, Chasten Harmon, Jay Armstrong Johnson, Kaitlin Kiyan, Josh Lamon, Nicole Lewis, John Moauro, Brandon Pearson, Paris Remillard, Megan Reinking, Michael James Scott, Maya Sharpe, Tommar Wilson, Rachel Bay Jones, Ryan Watkinson, Krystal Joy Brown, Heath Calvert, Matt DeAngelis, Hannah Shankman and Ryan Watkinson.
