Rickman, Chancellor, Teale and Burke Will Bring Donmar's Creditors to BAM in 2010

The Donmar Warehouse production of August Strindberg's Creditors will make its U.S. premiere at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in April 2010.

BAM has announced its spring programming of theatre, music, opera and dance. As previously announced, the bill will feature the return of the Bridge Project. Sam Mendes helms the dual productions of As You Like It and The Tempest, which begin performances in January.

Newly added are the Maly Drama Theatre of St. Petersburg production of Chekhov's Uncle Vanya, running April 7-11, 2010 in the Harvey Theatre. Lev Dodin stages the U.S. premiere of the play that will be performed in Russian with English titles.

Uncle Vanya has production design by David Borovsky; costumes by Irina Tsvetkova and Maria Formina; lighting by Ekaterina Dorofeeva and Vitally Skorodumov; and sound by Vladimir Troyan.

"Written in 1895," press notes state, "the humorous yet ultimately tragic tale explores themes of unrequited love and the acceptance of fate. Capable of exploring the darkest extremities of the human condition and the highest manifestations of the human spirit, the Maly Drama Theatre productions, performed by a resident company of actors in repertory, are emotionally and intellectually intense experiences which transcend cultural boundaries."

Alan Rickman (My Name is Rachel Corrie, "Harry Potter," "Sweeney Todd") stages David Greig's new version of Creditors, by August Strindberg, that will run April 16-May 16, 2010 in the Harvey Theatre. The cast from the Donmar production, including Anna Chancellor, Tony winner Owen Teale and Tom Burke, will reunite for the BAM production.

The design team includes Ben Stones (set design), Fotini Dimou (costume design), Hoaward Harrison (lighting design) and Adam Cork (composer and sound design).

"Anxiously awaiting the return of his new wife Tekla, who is away on a trip, artist Adolph finds solace in the words of a stranger. But comfort soon turns to destruction as old wounds are opened, insecurities are laid bare, and former debts are settled. Despite its period setting, Creditors is a fiercely modern take on one of Strindberg’s most explosive explorations of the battle between the sexes.

BAM will also host its inaugural opera festival — including the world premiere of Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas and the U.S. premiere of his opera The Fairy Queen, as well as the world premiere of Marc-Antoine Charpentier Actéon — March 18-27, 2010.

Additional offerings at BAM include the Mark Morris Dance Company's Socrates, Looky and Behemoth (Feb. 23-27, 2010); DanceAfrica 2010 (May 28-31, 2010); and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater (June 10-20, 2010).
