Tavares, who portrayed Billy in the Sydney and Melbourne productions of the Tony-winning musical, will join the cast alongside newcomer Redhead, who will be making his Broadway debut as Billy. Both Tavares and Redhead are expected to begin performances in the Broadway production of Billy Elliot in December.
As previously reported, a current Billy, Tommy Batchelor, will exit the Broadway production to headline the Chicago company of Billy Elliot, which begins performances March 18, 2010 at the Oriental Theatre. Batchelor's last performance on Broadway will be Dec. 11.
The cast of Billy Elliot features Tony winners David Alvarez and Trent Kowalik, as well as Batchelor and Alex Ko as Billy. The company also includes Kate Hennig as Mrs. Wilkinson, Tony winner Gregory Jbara as Dad, Carole Shelley as Grandma, Will Chase as Tony and Trevor Braun and Keean Johnson as Michael.
The musical earned ten 2009 Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical. Billy Elliot has music by Elton John, book and lyrics by Lee Hall, choreography by Peter Darling and direction by Stephen Daldry. The production opened on Nov. 13, 2008, at Broadway's Imperial Theatre.
