Lark Names Playwrights for U.S./Mexico Exchange

Irela de Villers, Edgar Alvarez Estrada, Elena Guiochins and Noé Morales Muñoz have been selected for the Lark Play Development Center's U.S./Mexico Playwright Exchange Program.

For the fourth year in a row, the Lark has aligned with Mexico’s Fund for Culture and Arts to present "The Word Exchange," which pairs four Mexican playwrights with the American playwrights/translators. The ten-day residency allows for translation and development of the plays. Mexican playwrights are also introduced to New York theatre industry leaders.

The plays and artists follow: Quetzalcoatl Puddle by Irela de Villers, translated by Rogelio Martinez (the story of a love triangle on a beach with an artificial sun); Gourmet Homicide: or the fine art of Murder by Edgar Alvarez Estrada, translated by Maria Fernanda Coppel (about four strangers whose common pastime is murder); A Lover’s Dismantling: Fragments of a Scenic Discourse by Elena Guiochins, translated by Andy Bragen (the story of two couples finding, living and losing love through time, distance and dreams); and Hitler in my Heart by Noé Morales Muñoz, translated by Maria Alexandria Beech (a play that reveals the evil we all carry within).

The 2009 U.S./México Advisory Committee includes Maria Alexandria Beech, Luis Castro, Migdalia Cruz, Henry Godinez, Daniel Jáquez, Marléne Ramírez-Cancio, Andrea Thome and Raul Zorilla.

"The Word Exchange" will result in free public presentations of the plays on Nov. 21 and 22 at the Lark Studio, located at 939 Eighth Avenue, 2nd Floor.
