The early closing announcement comes days after SoHo Playhouse executive director Darren Lee Cole announced that he and the Irish Repertory Theatre would move the Irish Rep production of The Emperor Jones to a commercial run at the playhouse beginning Dec. 15. The announcement took Made in Heaven producers by surprise.
In regard to the Dec. 7 closing announcement of Made in Heaven, lead producer Barbara Ligeti issued the following statement: "We agonized over this decision. And while we were shocked to read an announcement that The Emperor Jones would be moving into our contracted venue, the SoHo Playhouse made us a very favorable offer, and we felt that sparring with them, to the detriment of the Irish Rep's wonderful production, would be counterproductive and mean-spirited."
Producers intend to announce dates of a New York return and Los Angeles engagement of Bernzweig's comedy in the near future.
Andrew Shaifer directs the four-person work that features Alex Anfanger (Moments) and Kevin T. Collins (Angels, "Taking Woodstock") as twins Max and Benjie. The cast also includes Maia Madison (House and Garden, "Weeds") and Steve Wilder ("Days of Our Lives,""Melrose Place").
"In Made In Heaven," press notes state, "conjoined twins Max and Benjie share everything — a life, a career, even a penis. But when they plan to propose marriage to their mutual girlfriend, Benjie reveals a secret so big it threatens to tear the brothers apart. Family ties are put to the ultimate test in this irreverent comedy about love in all its various forms -- and the messy complications that invariably get in its way."
The production has scenic design by Lex Liang, costume design by Jeffrey Wallach and lighting design by Kia Rogers. Barbara Ligeti, Andrew Shaifer and Victor Syrmis produce.
