David Martin Stars in Great American Seasonal Songbook at London's New End Theatre

David Martin, co-writer of the hit Barry Manilow song "Can't Smile Without You" and whose songs have also been recorded by Cliff Richard, Cilla Black and Elvis Presley, among others, is starring in The Great American Seasonal Songbook, opening at London's New End Theatre Dec. 10.



Previews began Dec. 8. It runs through Jan. 10, 2010. Martin is joined by West End and classical singer Louisa Parry in a production directed by Heather Simpkin that features a live band under the musical direction of Andy Rumble.

The show features the music of composers including Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Rodgers and Hammerstein and Rodgers and Hart, including "My Funny Valentine," "The Summer Wind," "Autumn in New York" and "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." According to press materials, "the show will center on the four seasons, spring, summer, autumn and winter."

Martin, who has been a singer-songwriter for 40 years, wrote the signature tune for the annual TV "Children in Need" campaign that was played for ten years from 1990 to 2000. He also wrote the tune for Dorothy.com for the Kids Taskforce. Amongst his other songs co-written with Chris Arnold and Geoff Morrow are "There's A Whole Lot of Loving," "Let's Be Friends" (recorded by Elvis Presley), "Don't You Know," "The Right One Is Left," "So Long" and "Can't You Hear the Song?" He is currently working on a musical stage adaptation of Great Expectations.

Parry has appeared in the West End in The Phantom of the Opera and on tour and regionally in Grease, Les Miserables and Annie. She has also appeared with Carl Rosa Opera. She is a vocal studies tutor at the University of Manchester.
