Freeman to Join Broadway's Mary Poppins Dec. 12

Tony nominee Jonathan Freeman will begin performances in the Broadway company of Disney's Mary Poppins Dec. 12 at the New Amsterdam Theatre.

Freeman, a Tony nominee for She Loves Me, will assume the roles of Admiral Boom and Bank Chairman as of the 2 PM matinee. Mary Poppins began performances on Broadway Oct. 14, 2006.

The cast also features Laura Michelle Kelly in the title role, Christian Borle as Bert, Jeff Binder as Mr. Banks, Rebecca Luker as Mrs. Banks, Valerie Boyle as Mrs. Brill, Ann Arvia as Bird Woman, Mark Price as Robertson and Ruth Gottschall as Miss Andrew. Juliette Allen Angelo, Kelsey Fowler and Cassady Leonard alternate as Jane Banks; Jeremiah Kissane, Matthew Schechter and Andrew Shipman alternate as Michael Banks.

Freeman has appeared on Broadway in The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, 42nd Street, How to Succeed, The Producers, Sherlock Holmes and Platinum. Off-Broadway he was seen in Finian's Rainbow, Sail Away, Of Thee I Sing, Li'l Abner and A Class Act.

Richard Eyre directs Mary Poppins, which features choreography and co-direction by Matthew Bourne and boasts original songs from the film — with music and lyrics by Richard M. Sherman and Robert B. Sherman — as well as new songs and additional music and lyrics by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. Julian Fellowes wrote the book.
