Michael Morpurgo's 1982 novel, "War Horse," recently adapted for the London stage, will also be adapted for motion pictures, with "Billy Elliot" screenwriter Lee Hall penning the screenplay.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, DreamWorks Studios has acquired film rights to the novel. Steven Spielberg, Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Revel Guest will produce.
The novel about a boy and his horse over the course of World War I was a runner-up for the Whitbread Award in the U.K. The stage version was a huge hit for the National, and there are plans for a Broadway run, though no dates have been announced.
"From the moment I read Michael Morpurgo's novel 'War Horse,' I knew this was a film I wanted DreamWorks to make," Spielberg said. "Its heart and its message provide a story that can be felt in every country."
Spielberg recently dropped plans to remake "Harvey," based on the play of the same name.
Hall also penned the libretto and lyrics for to the Tony Award-winning Billy Elliot.
