Tony nominee Stanley Tucci makes his Broadway directorial debut with the backstage comedy that will feature Tony winner Anthony LaPaglia (A View from the Bridge, The Rose Tattoo) as opera singer Tito Merelli and Golden Globe winner Tony Shalhoub ("Monk," Conversations With My Father) as producer Sanders. Casting for the role of Max has yet to be announced.
Previews begin March 11, 2010, with an official opening set for April 4, 2010.
Tenor will also feature two-time Tony nominee Jan Maxwell (The Royal Family, Coram Boy) as Maria, Mary Catherine Garrison (Assassins, Rabbit Hole) as Maggie, Tony nominee Jennifer Laura Thompson (Urinetown, Wicked) as Diana, Jay Klaitz (High Fidelity) as the Bellhop and Brooke Adams (The Heidi Chronicles, "Monk") as Julia.
The 1930s-set play "is a madcap screwball comedy that takes place when Tito Merelli, the fiery-tempered and world-famous Italian superstar, arrives in Cleveland, Ohio to make his debut with the local opera and promptly goes missing. As Saunders, the show's presenter, conspires to cover for Tito's absence, placate his hot-blooded wife, and distract his most passionate fans, chaos on a truly operatic level ensues," press notes state.
Director Stanley Tucci earned a Tony Award nomination for his performance in Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune. His stage appearances include The Queen and the Rebels, The Misanthrope, Brighton Beach Memoirs and The Iceman Cometh. On screen Tucci can be seen in "Julie & Julia," "The Lovely Bones," "The Devil Wears Prada," as well as "Big Night" and "Blind Date," both of which he co-wrote and directed.
