Representatives for Lincoln Center Theater told Playbill.com that the workshop will begin March 4. Tony-winning director Bartlett Sher (South Pacific, Light in the Piazza) directs the David Yazbek-Jeffrey Lane musical adaptation of Pedro Almodóvar's 1988 film.
In addition to LuPone (Gypsy, Evita, Sweeney Todd) and Hewitt (Rocky Horror, Dracula), the reading will feature Sherie Rene Scott (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Everyday Rapture), Jessica Biel ("Blade: Trinity," Guys and Dolls at the Hollywood Bowl) and Oscar Isaac (Romeo and Juliet, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Beauty of the Father). Paulo Szot (South Pacific) had been previously mentioned, but is not involved in the latest workshop.
Earlier workshop participants included Biel, Szot, Joanna Gleason, Salma Hayek and Matthew Morrison. Yazbek (music/lyrics) and Lane (book) previously collaborated on the Tony-nominated musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.
The Oscar-nominated film centers on Pepa, a voice-over actress on a mission to deliver an important secret to her philandering boyfriend, Iván. A two-day chase ensues, involving Iván's mentally insane ex-wife, her son Carlos, Shiite terrorists, a mambo-loving taxi driver, gazpacho laced with sleeping pills and a charred bed.
