Matt Cavenaugh to Star in Revised It's a Bird…It's a Plane…It's Superman

Broadway's Matt Cavenaugh will fly into the heroic title role of the 1966 Charles Strouse and Lee Adams musical It's a Bird…It's a Plane…It's Superman, which will be staged in newly revised production by the Dallas Theater Center in June.

Most recently seen on Broadway as Tony in the revival of West Side Story, Cavenaugh will star as the Man of Steel in the production that features additional material by Good Boys and True playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who is also a writer for such comic books as "Marvel Knights 4" and "Sensational Spider-Man."

David Newman and Robert Benton penned the original book for the musical that has a score by Bye Bye Birdie writers Strouse (music) and Adams (lyrics). ("You've Got Possibilities" is a standout number that has had life in cabarets and concerts.)

In addition to Cavenaugh, the cast will also feature previously announced DTC company members Hassan El-Amin, Sean Hennigan and Cedric Neal.

As previously reported, DTC artistic director Kevin Moriarty will direct Superman with choreography by Joel Ferrell. Performances run June 18-July 25. An official opening has been set for June 25 in the Dee and Charles Wyly Theatre at the AT&T Performing Arts Center.

It's a Bird…It's a Plane…It's Superman will have set design by Beowulf Boritt, costumes by Jennifer Caprio, lighting by Jeff Croiter and sound design by Robert Kaplowitz.

Cavenaugh has appeared in the Broadway productions of A Catered Affair, Grey Gardens and Urban Cowboy.
