Fires Again Cause Old Globe to Cancel Catered Affair and Pink Lady Oct. 24
24 Oct 2007
The Oct. 24 performances of the world premiere of the new musical A Catered Affair and the American premiere of Oscar and the Pink Lady have been canceled due to the ongoing California wildfires.
"Although The Old Globe itself is not in immediate danger, several staff members and patrons have been affected by the devastating fire situation. We wanted to cancel performances in order to give them peace of mind in dealing with the security of their families and to ensure their safety by not having them make the possibly dangerous drive into Balboa Park," said Old Globe executive director Lou Spisto. "We hope to resume performances on Thursday, October 25, and we will make every effort to exchange patrons' tickets into convenient performance dates later in the run."
Performances of Catered Affair (at the Old Globe Theatre) and Pink Lady (at the Cassius Carter Centre Stage) were also canceled Oct. 23.
Patrons will be contacted by the Globe to arrange tickets to alternate performances. Ticketholders may also contact The Old Globe box office at their own convenience during regular office hours at (619) 23-GLOBE (234-5623).
More than a dozen wildfires have continued to burn across seven counties of California — including Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties — for four days. More than 1,000 homes have been destroyed in the more than 400,000 acres of destruction. The number of people being evacuated nears 900,000.
The Old Globe currently houses A Catered Affair (through Nov. 11), the new musical by librettist Harvey Fierstein and composer-lyricist John Bucchino based on the Paddy Chayefsky teleplay. John Doyle directs the debut of the Broadway-bound work featuring Faith Prince, Tom Wopat, Matt Cavenaugh, Leslie Kritzer and Fierstein himself.
The company also presents Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt's Oscar and the Pink Lady (through Nov. 4). Frank Dunlop directs the stateside premiere of the work featuring Rosemary Harris. For more information, visit theoldglobe.org.
