"For Colored Girls," Tyler Perry's film adaptation of Ntozake Shange's Tony Award-nominated play for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf, was named Outstanding Motion Picture at the ceremony. The film also took home awards for Perry's direction and for Kimberly Elise, who was named Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture.

Tony and Academy Award winner Denzel Washington received the Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture award for his performance in "The Book of Eli." Halle Berry and Samuel L. Jackson, who are both likely to make their Broadway debuts this fall in Katori Hall's The Mountantop, received  awards for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture for "Frankie and Alice," and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for "Mother and Child," respectively.

Stage actors honored in the television categories included Tony nominee Vanessa Williams, who took home Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series for her work on "Desperate Housewives." Sofia Vergara was named Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series for "Modern Family," Terrence Howard received Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series honors for "Law & Order: Los Angeles," and Tony nominee S. Epatha Merkerson was named Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for "Law & Order." "Tyler Perry's House of Payne" was named Outstanding Comedy Series, and "Grey's Anatomy" was awarded Outstanding Drama Series.
