Tony Award Nominee Michael Hayden and Drama Desk winner Rachel York will join Tony-winning actress Daisy Eagan in Ghostlight, a new musical exploring the seedy side of the Ziegfeld Follies, which will play as part of the New York Musical Theatre Festival beginning Sept. 26.
Based on a true story about performers in the early-20th-century Follies, Ghostlight has book, music and lyrics by Matthew Martin and Tim Realbuto, who will co-direct. The musical will run Sept. 26-Oct. 9 at the Signature Theatre's Peter Norton Space.
Hayden (Carousel, Judgment at Nuremburg) will star as showman Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. with York (City of Angels, Victor/Victoria, Putting It Together) as his wife Billie Burke, of "Wizard of Oz" and Ziegfeld Follies fame.
The cast also features the previously announced Eagan (The Secret Garden, Les Miserables, James Joyce's The Dead) will play Molly Cook with Rachael Fogle (Little Women) as Olive Thomas; Matt Leisy (The Fantasticks) as Olive's husband, Jack Pickford; and Kimberly Faye Greenberg (One Night With Fanny Brice) as Fanny Brice.
According to the authors, "Ghostlight excavates the true story of Olive Thomas, a small-town girl who rises to headline alongside Fanny Brice in the Ziegfeld Follies. Seduced by the decadent world of the theater, Olive stumbles into a secret affair, an unfulfilling Hollywood marriage, and a downward spiral into drugs and alcohol. An homage to Broadway's Golden Age, Ghostlight captures the glamorous and tragic lives of those who changed the face of the American musical forever."
The production will have musical direction by Matt Aument, choreography by Michael Kidney, and scenic and lighting design by David Goldstein.
