Musicals such as Bonnie & Clyde, Death Takes a Holiday, Leap of Faith, Newsies The Musical, Nice Work If You Can Get It, Once and Queen of the Mist are among the productions competing in the Drama Desk's Outstanding Musical category, which were announced April 27. All of the productions, with the exception of Nice Work..., are also contenders in the Outstanding Music category.
In addition, several Drama Desk Award-nominated musical revivals returned to New York this year with fresh orchestrations, including Carrie (Doug Besterman), Porgy and Bess (William David Brohn and Christopher Jahnke) and Evita (Andrew Lloyd Webber and David Cullen).
A representative for the awards had no further comment on the board's decision to drop the category. A statement in the nominations release reads: "The Board also decided to eliminate the category of Orchestrations."
The 2011-2012 Drama Desk Nominating Committee is composed of: Barbara Siegel, Chairperson (TalkinBroadway.com, TheaterMania.com); Suzanna Bowling (Times Square Chronicles); Lawrence Harbison (Smith and Kraus, Inc.); Mark Peikert (Back Stage); Richard Ridge (Broadway Beat TV/BroadwayWorld.com); and Frank Verlizzo (Fraver Design).
In 2011 the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Orchestrations was awarded to Larry Hochman and Stephen Oremus for The Book of Mormon.
