The box office has boomed for the pop musical about newsboys striking against management in 1890s New York. Given that its 1992 film source was a box office flop, it was not instantly clear that the revised and refreshed stage version would catch fire at the Nederlander Theatre box office. It has. The week ending May 13, the show grossed $931,370 and played to 100.8 percent capacity. Its average ticket price was a more-than-healthy $96.63.
Newsies was nominated for eight Tony Awards, including Best Book (Harvey Fierstein), Best Score (Jack Feldman and Alan Menken), Best Actor (Jeremy Jordan), Best Direction of a Musical (Jeff Calhoun) and Best Choreography (Christopher Gattelli).
The current cast will stay with the production.
