As previously reported, the six-episode drama, starring Tony nominee Sigourney Weaver (Hurlyburly) as a former First Lady, is created by Greg Berlanti, Laurence Mark and Warner Horizon. "Political Animals" will premiere on the USA network July 15 at 10 PM ET.
Redgrave will play Diane Nash, a lesbian Supreme Court Justice, who is the first openly gay member of the Court and is friend and mentor to Elaine Barrish (Weaver).
Also in the cast are Tony Award winner Ellen Burstyn (Same Time, Next Year), Kristine Nielsen (Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson), James Wolk, Sebastian Stan (Talk Radio), Brittany Ishibashi, Ciarán Hinds (The Seafarer), Carla Gugino (The Road to Mecca) and Adrian Pasdar.
The series "is a fictional look at a former first family that exposes a dynasty weakened by political ambition, lust and greed. It centers on Elaine Barrish (Weaver), the divorced former First Lady and newly appointed Secretary of State who throws herself into the job after recovering from the dissolution of her marriage and losing the presidential nomination. Barrish relies heavily on her son Doug (Wolk), an ambitious politico who serves as her chief of staff, but is tormented by his twin brother's struggles with addiction. With a philandering ex-husband (Hinds) who is still as much in love with her as the office he once held, she attempts to keep her family together, while simultaneously dealing with crises of the State Department and a hungry DC journalist (Gugino) bent on destroying her career."
Redrave won a Tony Award in 2003 for her performance in Long Day's Journey Into Night and has also been nominated for her performances in The Year of Magical Thinking and Driving Miss Daisy. Her other Broadway credits include Not About Nightingales, Orpheus Descending and The Lady from the Sea. Visit her page at the Playbill Vault.
