The Post reports that the Public is raising funds in the hopes of a Broadway transfer for Into the Woods, with an eye toward the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. The Hirschfeld, formerly the Martin Beck Theatre, is where Into the Woods made its Tony-winning Broadway debut in 1987.
The national tour of Fela! is currently playing a limited run at the Hirschfeld through Aug. 4, and the new Broadway musical Kinky Boots is scheduled to begin performances at the Hirschfeld in 2013.
Into the Woods will officially open at the Delacorte Aug. 9 for a run through Aug. 25. Previews began July 24. The engagement is based on the 2010 Regent's Park Open Air Theatre London staging. The Public Theater enlisted original London co-directors Timothy Sheader and Liam Steel to re-explore the production in a fresh incarnation for Shakespeare in the Park.
The Public cast is led by original 1987 Broadway Into the Woods cast member Chip Zien as the Mysterious Man, with Tony Award winner Donna Murphy (Passion, Wonderful Town) as the Witch, Tony Award winner Denis O'Hare (Take Me Out, Assassins) as the Baker, Academy Award nominee Amy Adams ("Enchanted," "The Fighter") as the Baker's Wife, Tony nominee Jessie Mueller (On a Clear Day...) as Cinderella and Tony Award winner Glenn Close (Sunset Boulevard, Death and the Maiden, "Damages," "Fatal Attraction") as the prerecorded voice of the Giant.
