The world-premiere production of Sam Shepard's Heartless, directed by Daniel Aukin for Signature Theatre Company, begins previews Aug. 7. The staging features Jenny Bacon (In the Wake), Gary Cole ("Office Space," "The West Wing"), Betty Gilpin (We Live Here), Julianne Nicholson ("Boardwalk Empire," This) and Lois Smith (The Illusion, The Trip to Bountiful, Broadway's Buried Child).
The Off-Broadway production runs to Sept. 16, opening on Aug. 27, in The Irene Diamond Stage at The Pershing Square Signature Center (480 W. 42nd Street between 9th and 10th Avenues).
In the play, according to Signature notes, "Sally [played by Nicholson] lives with her mysterious family in a cavernous home overlooking Los Angeles. When a visitor arrives, Sally's dark secrets — and the secrets of those around her — threaten to come into the light."
Pulitzer Prize winner Shepard (A Lie of the Mind, Curse of the Starving Class, True West, Buried Child) was Signature's 1996-97 Playwright-in-Residence.
