Aristic director Chris Coleman will stage the dark, Tony-winning musical that officially opens Sept. 21 and will run through Oct. 21. It has a book by Wheeler and music and lyrics by Sondheim.
Gigl (Ragtime, Les Miserables, A Little Night Music) stars in the title role, with Portland favorite Rumbaugh (The Drowsy Chaperone) as Mrs. Lovett. Ragusa (Young Frankenstein) will portray the Beggar Woman with Hobson (Next to Normal, Bonnie & Clyde) as Anthony.
The cast also features Rita Markova, Eric Little, Matthew Alan Smith, Martin C. Hurt, Eric Scott Kincaid, Tim Smith, Bruce Blanchard, Matthew Hayward, Robert Koutras, Dru Rutledge, Nicole Tori and Leah Yorkston.
The original production of Sweeney Todd won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, when it premiered on Broadway in 1979 starring Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury. The 2005 Broadway revival, directed by John Doyle, featured a reduced cast, all of whom played instruments as well as their respective roles.
