"My time on Broadway in The Best Man has been a once in a lifetime experience that I am devastated to have to cut short. Also once in a lifetime, is my opportunity to be with my mother at this time in her life. I am sad to leave the production, but grateful to be my mother's daughter a little while longer," Shepherd said in a statement.
Page (August: Osage County, Anna Christie), who took over for Shepherd in late August, will continue with the role through the final performance of The Best Man on Sept. 9. Shepherd ("Moonlighting," "Cybill") made her Broadway debut in the production. Candice Bergen originated the role of Alice Russell in the 2012 revival.
The 1960 play, directed by Michael Wilson (Orphans' Home Cycle, Dividing the Estate), began performances at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on March 6. Shepherd was part of a handful of fresh actors who began performances in late July.
The cast also includes Curtis Billings, Corey Brill, Tony Carlin, Donna Hanover, Sherman Howard, Olja Hrustic, Bill Kux, James Lecesne, Dakin Matthews, Fred Parker, Jr. and Amy Tribbey.
